Academic Advising

OPERATION OF THE ACADEMIC ADVISING PROCESS

In our department, academic advising services are provided to support students’ academic development, guide them in course selection and registration processes, offer solutions to academic problems encountered, facilitate their adaptation to university life, and inform and direct them on professional development and career-related matters.

The advising process in our department operates as follows:

1. Advisor assignment is made. Each student is assigned an academic advisor by the department. Students can learn their assigned advisor through the Student Information System (SIS).

2. Advising hours are determined. Academic advisors determine the days and hours during which they will meet with students. These hours are announced by the department or communicated to students by the advisors.

3. The student contacts the advisor regarding their needs. Students may consult their advisors on matters such as course selection, registration renewal, academic planning, absenteeism, academic performance, graduation requirements, and similar issues.

4. A meeting is conducted. Advising meetings may be held face-to-face or, when necessary, online or via email. During these meetings, the student’s requests, questions, and problems are evaluated.

5. Course selection and approval procedures are carried out. During registration periods, students submit their selected courses for their advisor’s approval. The advisor provides guidance by considering the student’s academic status and approves the appropriate courses.

6. Academic development is monitored. The advisor monitors the student’s academic progress and, when necessary, provides guidance on course performance, career planning, academic goals, and adaptation to the departmental process.

7. Problems and suggestions are referred to relevant units. Issues that cannot be resolved by the advisor or that require administrative action are directed, as needed, to the department chair or relevant units.

8. The process continues throughout the term. Advising services are not limited to course registration periods; they constitute an ongoing guidance process that continues at every stage where the student needs support.
